Looking for ways to convince your boss to let you work form home? Then before you proceed any further, we suggest you first evaluate the following:
Understand that not everyone is a suitable candidate for working from home. Unlike in the office, there will be lots of distraction. For the less disciplined among us, productivity and thus work performance level may fall.
Some positions are simply not suitable for conversion to work from home jobs. If you are a production worker, relying heavily on the office machinery at work, working from home is simply not possible. Thus when evaluating your job, honestly ask yourself if proximity to your co-workers is important to execute your role. If it is, you will likely be better of working in the office.

If you are still convinced a home-based position is suitable for you after carefully evaluating both yourself and your current role, the following pointers may then be of help:
Understand your Boss
What sort of a person is he? Is he one who tows the line or does he often speak out for things he believes in? If you have a boss who hardly speaks out on any issue preferring always to go with the flow, then chances are you will be wasting your time approaching him if the culture of the company does not support home based jobs.
Understand too how your boss thinks of you. Are you a valuable member of his team or simply just one of the many? Does you boss respect you as a person and trust in your ability and discipline to work independently. If you are not really in his good books, it is perhaps also not the right time to ask.
Do Some Research
Next search the web for any information that can help make your proposal stronger. This can include research papers to show employees are more engaged when working from home or even experiences of similar type companies who have tried out work from home schemes.
Prepare Your Presentation Beforehand
Once all your preparation work is done, prepare a presentation deck to guide you through your discussion with your boss. In this presentation deck, touch on:
- All the benefits you have previously identified
- Some concerns they may have and how you intend to overcome them
- A set of measurable key performance indicator to give your boss comfort that your productivity level can be tracked
- Support documents in the form of research papers or experiences of other companies.
Actual Discussion with Your Boss
Go through your presentation deck with him. While doing so, try to keep the discussion focused objectively on the productivity and benefits you have identified.
